Back At Zanoach

No, don't worry, just here for tonight -- I need to get some stuff, and I'm on my way to Efrat. I got a ride from a guy in the Ohr Etziyyon who actually lives in Efrat (but I needed to come back to Yesodei) and he dropped me off, he said, "everyone who goes here go to Beit Shemesh." So I started walking, 10 seconds later a car comes, flag it down, and he brings me right to the path to go to Zanoach. And I might get a free ride to Yerushalayim tomorrow too...

Ohr Etziyyon is really good. One thing I love: Ovadyah, a shiur vav guy (6th year), BLASTS Jewish Music in the morning. I love it. Wake up to Shwekey, its' chill. You don't get that everywhere.

I feel my hebrew improving. It's still a little hard, but I'm getting there. I speak Ivrit most of the day--although surprisingly there are a lot of English speakers there (a lot of guys who are sons of those who made aliyyah, or made aliyyah when they were young)--all my chavrusos are in Ivrit. All my roomates are Israeli. There's an American from MTA actually, it's pretty cool.

Food's ok. Breakfast isn't god at all. I have tomatoes everyday for breakfast, that's it. Lunch and dinner isn't so bad. Oily.

There's shiur in here, so I'm going to bounce. Email me. Call me. Whatever you want.

Schimmelism Of The Week LVIII

Ezra: Tonny, you have to get those blue stains out of your tzitzis...

Well I'm Here

I don't have much time -- 5 minutes til seder, but I just wanted to tell y'all I'm here. I'm getting settled. Still finding a room (more on that later)... also still in the midst of finding chavrusos.

The Hebrew isn't as bad as I originally thought it would be. I'm conversing pretty well with the Israelis. And the Americans...
Aight, seder time, peace.

The Last Supper

Really, I had a last supper ("dinner you tard!" - Roth) -- I went out to Burger's bar with Roth, Yoni, and Yitzi (Yitz!). That steak sandwich was sooo good. That bbq sauce/1000 Island combo is far superior than anything else. It may have been so good because Roth was paying for me, but still...and free food is the way to go.

Tomorrow at 8 am, I am bouncing off to Ohr Etziyyon. With my new phone I might add. Pesh is bringing it tomorrow when she picks me up. Can't wait...

I don't know how often I'll be on the computer. I'l try to update often, tell everyone how I'm doing, how Israeli Hesder yeshiva is.

TIl next time...

Peace y'all.

To All You Beltran Haters III

'Bel" Tolls for Mets in Game 1
Lefty's seven scoreless innings supported by two-run homer
By Marty Noble / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Unspoken in the public prologue of their second postseason assignment was a sense of urgency the Mets developed quickly on Wednesday night, when postponement of the first game of their National League Championship Series made their mission an even greater challenge. The Cardinals and the Mets' mounting medical misfortune was enough adversity, but then Mother Nature added water.

You read about these things, you watch some hair-netted nitwit peer into Geraldo's camera and declare, "By golly, I was gonna go in that car with him" ... and you roll your eyes, numb to the tale's banality. Someone was always gonna go in that car with him. Or eat that burger. Or take that plane flight.

And then it's you.

6 St Louis Family Members Injured

I got this email from Peggy this morning:

Dear Family & Friends,

Here is the latest update from my niece, Suri:

My very close friend's family was in a terrible car accident on the way home from a Chol Hamoed trip. Her father, 2 sisters and 3 brothers were in the car and ended up going to 4 different hospitals. Two of them had to be air-lifted. One brother is in surgery through the night another had breathing difficulties. One of her sisters is in the ICU with bruising to her brain, a fractured jaw, and a broken leg. We heard that their van turned over six times while they were inside it.

While some are in more critical condition than others, all of them desperately need your tefillos. Please, take at least a minute to say some tehillim for:
Most critical - Dovid ben Bracha
Tehilla bas Bracha
Elisha ben Bracha
Aviva Rochel bas Bracha
Eliyahu Chaim ben Bracha
Elazar Yitzchok ben Zlata Faiga

May they all have a refuah shelaimah and may we all be zoche to share only simchos together.

Thank you,
Peggy

Tehilla is my cousin Rivka's best friend.

Please daven.

Thank you.

Sukkos In Israel

It's so nice in this country. It's still a little too hot, but walking around, seeing sukkahs all around, hearing people eating, singing, learning, sleeping in their sukkahs, it's nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

I even got to watch some Mets. I went to a baguette place in Beit Shemesh to watch the first game. 5 Yesodei guys, and around 25 Reishit guys. Great game, great food.

But anyway, I was able to get my Four Heretics (4 Minim, right...?) an hour before Shabbos/Yomtov for 65 shekel. 50 for lulav, esrog and aravos, 10 for hadasim, and 5 for the holder thing. An hour before.

Friday night I ate at the Lipkins. Their son-in-law Zev was saying how when he was growing up in Cleveland, they would sing, "We are Sukkah Number 1....Where is Numbe 2?" and so on, and it would keep going until around Sukkah 40. So we tried it. We got Sukkah Number 2, but that's it. We did it again a minute later, but now even Sukkah 2 didn't answer. R' Wolicki was actually eating at Sukkah 2, and in the morning I asked him what he thought, he just gave me a face like, come on, that's childish. It was very amusing actually.

The rest of Sukkos until now I've just been chilling here in Beit Shemesh. Yehoshu'a's house, Sholly's, the Wolicki's (mad leftovers from the Esseses), yeshiva.

Going to the Beit Shemesh concert tonight. Going to Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgher Rebbe's Simchas Beis HaSho'eiva Tuesday night, and Weds night I have a family bbq at my aunts, and also Simchas Beis HaSho'eiva at R' Kahn's. I don't know how I'm gonna do that one....*sigh*

I love Sukkos. You know why? Because we have to be happy. Yes, have to. The Torah says to be happy twice when talking about Sukkos. The Rambam and Vilana Ga'on both say it's actually a mitzvah, and the GR"A says that it's the hardest mitzvah in the Torah. Why does he say that? Well, how many times do people say, "You can't tell me how to feel!" or something like that? We can't tell people how to feel, yet the Torah is telling us, be happy on Sukkos. When life happens, sometimes it's hard to be happy. But HaShem is saying, put everything aside right now, which is hard to do, and be happy. But with everything going on, it's kinda easy -- eating amazing food, singing, sukkah hopping, going to Simchas Beis HaSho'eivos, concerts, chilling with friends. It's the way to go. Be HAPPY!

Mo'adim L'Simcha everybody. *Chagim uzmanim l'sason*

Schimmelism Of The Week LV

Ima: The welfare of our country (Israel) is in the hands of Zalman Nemoy and Tonny Schwarzmer -- better move to the Bronx!

Moreinu HaRav Yosef ben HaRav Dovid Singer ZTVK"L

I've heard so much about how here in Eretz Yisrael they have funerals even at night. I'm sure some of you have too. Well, I went to one tonight. On Har HaZeisim no less.

On Yom Kippur this past Monday, The Pilzner Rebbe, Rav Yosef Singer, passed away.

I'm willing to bet that not many of you have heard of Pilzner Chassidus before. Well, I didn't either until I met Yehoshu'a, a chassid who lives in American Beit Shemesh (he's British). He worked in yeshiva last year for a little bit, cleaning, cooking, this and that. After a while he stopped working there, but everyone stilled loved him and talked to him and all that.

I asked Yehoshu'a once (well, actually probably more like 3 or 4 times) which chassidus he's part of. He said back Pilzner. I said I never heard of that. He responds most people haven't.

He was from Pilz (sp?), near Warsaw. He lived in the Lower East Side. Yehoshu'a tells me, and I don't doubt it for a second, he was a tzaddik nistar (hidden tzaddik). He knew all of Torah (CTC!*). I asked Kabbalah? "All of it." "Was he lamed-vav (one of the 36 tzaddikim that support the world)?" "Some say he was."

One time Yehoshu'a was walking with the Rebbe around the Lower East Side where he lived. At one point, 6 big, black guys were coming towards them. Yehoshu'a said "Zeidie (that's what he calls him), maybe we should cross the street?" "No, it's ok, they're my friends." So they come and they surround the Rebbe. One comes close and says, "Rabbi Singer, I haven't seen you in a long time." And they were asking him questions that people usually ask rebbes; Advice and such. One of their daughers was sick, he wrote down her name. Yehoshua later asked what's going on? So the Rebbe says, "their grandparents used to break into my shul. One time i saw them outside, so I brought them some cookies and milk. Not only did they not break in again, they protected my shul from everyone else. And because they're one of the highest gangs in the area, no one ever broke in again. And these guys are the grandsons.
Every Pesach (and I think he said Friday night and yomtov too, but Pesach sticks out in my mind) the Rebbe would go around and make sure everyone has food. It got so dangerous, that the chief of police, Patrick O'Connor would go with the Rebbe. One time he said to Bubbe, the Rebbetzin, in his Irish accent, "you know Mrs Singer, I feel safer with the rabbi around then I do with my own cops.
He had mamash had open miracles in his house daily, Yehoshu'a said. One time his one of his granddaughers was very very sick (I think it was one of those the-dr-couldnt-do-anything cases). The Rebbe said, bring her to the mikvah. He took her, holding her across his arms like a baby. He stood over the mikvah like that for 3 hours. The next morning she woke up as if nothing happened.
He said he never lost his temper. He got angry, but he was always in control -- if he got angry, it would have been avodah zarah, so how can you get angry?

The Rebbe had three things: mesiras nefesh (working hard), love, and being positive. One time the Rebbe was asked, "What do you see when people come to see you, people with shmutz and stuff? Not nice people?" "What are you talking about? I see beautiful neshamas (souls)."

After we buried the Rebbe, we davened Ma'ariv. At the top of the cemetary, facing, of course, Har HaBayyis (Temple Mount--if someone was going to ask, "where's east?" I literally would have killed them). It was the best Ma'ariv of my life. LIke, all those things put together, the Rebbe, Har HaBayyis still not ours and still having that damn mosque on it, all that, I just had so much kavanah; "Please Lord, stop it" type thing.

Hopefully we can go into this new year learning something or two from this tzaddik nistar.

Moreinu HaRav Yosef ben HaRav Dovid Singer, Zeicher Tzaddik V'Kadosh Livracha.
