Not As Bad As Y'all Think

So recently it's been going around that because of all the steroids thing, and players being charged with crimes (Kobi Bryant, to name one), that we shouldn't look up to these players, we have to teach our kids not to have them as role models.

I beg to differ a little. We should tell them to watch carefully, and the ones that possess the good character traits, should be our role models--like Cal Ripken Jr, Mike Piazza (dude, he was drafted 61st in the 62nd of the draft, and now he is the greatest offensive catcher of all time, DON'T tell me there's nothing positive there), Tony Gwynn, etc.

Surprisingly, Shaq should be one of them.

I was watching ESPNews earlier tonight. They did a segment on Katrina, and about Tulane, and after that, said, "Shaq didn't go to Tulane, but he did go to LSU..." He went on to say that Shaq is going to the area to help out, and he'll be there until the end of the week, maybe even later.

Don't tell me we shouldn't have these players as role models.

Piazza the greatest offensive catcher of all time!? yeah right and the mets will for the series this year. maybe if you time warp to five years ago you can say he is the greatest offensive catcher. Seeing as now he sucks at catching and is only batting .259 I hardly feel you can claim that one anymore. How about pudge Rodreiguez for that title?

dani stop drinking the kool aid, and stop seeing the guy on the corner, becasue you MUST be smoking something. just because he's batting .259 now means NOTHING when we're talking about players over their whole careers. babe ruth sucked in his last few yrs, but he's still one of the greatest players ever. piazza has the most hr as a catcher ever, he has arounda CAREER .315 avrage, 8 away from 400 hrs, .937 OPS, over 1200 RBIs and believe it or not, he is one of 3 players to have 30 hrs, 100 rbis and .300 average in one season for 7 seasons in a row. who are the other 2? lou gherig and the babe. if you compare him to johnny bench, you'll see his stats are just a bit less in most categories, but thats cuz piazza played around 400 games LESS than him...

dani, just dont talk anymore, piazza is SO much better than pudge...

Fine maybe he's better over the course of his career. but you still haven't given a compelling arguement as to why he is a good role model and why you choose him over many other much better role models in the majors? I mean I do admire him for being the first openly gay player in the majors.

While I may be able to smoke the ball along with occasional sausage when it comes to defense I have to admit I suck.

I'm going to have to agree with Dani on this one. Then again I'm also going to have to agree with what Piazza himself said.

dani...i said to take certain good aspects of players. the aspect piazza i was looking at was the fact that he worked hard. very hard. he was picked 61st, in the 62nd round of the draft. something like the 2000th pick or something. i dont think thye expected him to even get up to the dodgers, let alone be the greatest offensive catcher ever (or is it the other way around?). the only way he could have gone from that draft pick to starting on the dodgers in his rookie year, was hard work. and he did it, when his friends were partying, he would be in the cage hacking it. and it has paid off.

how is he "openly gay" when he himself said that he is NOT GAY.

mike and shifra...lets get it straight, mike piazza is pretty damn good at defense too. the ONLY thing--ONLY meaning one--thing he cant do on D is throw out runners. that is the ONLY thing he cant do. he calls a great game, he blocks pitches in the dirt, he blocks the plate. i wanna see posada block the plate even ONCE!

its funny though, in the between-innings-warm-up-pitches, piazza always makes the trhow to 2nd, yet in the game he cant all the time.

I've seen Posada make blocks at the plate so there. And just because piazza can make the throw in between innings doesnt help the fact that he can't during the game.

yeah shifra, i know, i never said that hes awesome cuz he can between innings. he does suck at throwing guys out--but my point was thats the ONLY thing he cant do.
